Isaac Scott Hathaway (1872 - 1967) - Sculptor who designed the Booker T. Washington and Carver Washington half dollars. A Lexington, Kentucky native, he converted a chicken coop into his first studio. Educated at Chandler Normal College in Lexington. Studied at New England Conservatory in Boston, Cincinnati Art Academy, University of New York. He developed method of producing translucense from Alabama clay. He was the sculptural designer for the New National Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. Founded and headed Ceramics Departments at Alabama A&M College, Tuskegee Institute, and Alabama State College. First artist to make death masks of famous black Americans.
