Georgia Davis Powers (1923 - 2016) - She was the first black person to hold a seat in the Kentucky State Senate. Once in office, the senator, a champion for civil rights, introduced as her first bill, a statewide fair housing law, which prohibited discrimination. Even before holding office, she was one of the organizers of the Allied Organizations for Civil Rights, which worked for passage of statewide Public Accommodations and Equal Employment Opportunity anti-discrimination laws. During her 21 years in office, she sponsored civil rights legislation prohibiting sex, job, and age discrimination. She championed legislation for improved education for the physically and mentally disabled. Throughout her legislative tenure, she empowered blacks, women, children, the poor, and the disabled. She was a member of many organizations and a recipient of numerous awards. She wished to be to be remembered as “one who really cared.”
