Ed Hamilton (b. 1947), one of the most outstanding sculptors in America, was born on February 14, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Although born in Ohio, Mr. Hamilton was raised in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a 1969 graduate from the Louisville School of Art and attended the University of Louisville and Spalding University. Hamilton sculptures include some of the best in the world. His credits includes the following: 1) A statue of Booker T. Washington, Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia; 2) A 12 feet bronze statue honoring heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Louis, located at Cobo Hall and Arena, Detroit, Michigan; 3) Amistad Memorial, located at New Haven City Hall, New Haven, Connecticut; 4) The “Spirit of Freedom” an African-American Civil War Memorial”, 8’ x 9’ bronze statue located at the nation’s capital in Washington, DC. This monument memorializes approximately 200,000 black soldiers of the Civil War; 5) A life size bust honoring former Civil Rights Leader, Medgar Evers; 6) A statue of Whitney M. Young, Jr., Kentucky State University, Frankfort, Kentucky; 7) A statue of Lenny Lyles, Cardinal Park Complex, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky; 8) Vic Hellard, Jr., bronze plaque, state capitol, Frankfort, Kentucky; 9) Portrait Bust, Lois Morris, Louisville Board of Alderman, Shawnee Branch Library, Louisville, Kentucky. From 1983 - 2001, Hamilton has been commissioned to sculpt nine major projects and has won numerous awards such as the 1997 Kentucky Governor’s Award, 1990 Black Achiever’s Award, Who’s Who Among African Americans, and Outstanding Young Men in America award. Hamilton’s sculptures display his magnificent ability to capture the strength and dignity of humanity. He uses his talents, imagination and skills to capture the true meanings of time and history.
