Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians Nomination Form

The Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians is a poster series designed to introduce students, educators and the public to the achievements of some of Kentucky’s outstanding black citizens of the past and present.

The first poster, printed in the 1970, was of Dr. Thomas T. Wendell, a pioneer in the care of Kentucky’s mentally ill. There are currently forty-two (42) posters in the Gallery series.

Criteria for the Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians

  1. Must be an African American.
  2. Person has made an outstanding or significant contribution to the Commonwealth and/or worldwide through their work.
  3. Person should be born in Kentucky or live in the Commonwealth and their work has brought honor to Kentucky and/or directly affected the lives of citizens of Kentucky.
  4. Any citizen of the Commonwealth or outside of Kentucky can make nominations.

In an effort to continually diversify our Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians, we invite you to contact us with your suggestions for possible candidates. The Commission unveils two Gallery posters each year.

Please enter the candidate's name in the Subject field and their contribution(s) to the Commonwealth in the Comments field. Nominations can be anonymous, but the name and contribution(s) of the canidate is required.

Dr. Thomas T. Wendell
(1877 - 1953)
A pioneer in care of Kentucky’s mentally ill, Dr. Wendell, as Staff Physician at Eastern State Hospital, worked for twenty years to upgrade care of African American patients.  The Wendell Building of the hospital was named in his honor.  More.
