James Bond

James Bond (1863 - 1929) - Worked to end racial violence and discrimination as first Kentucky Director of Commission on Interracial Cooperation. Born a slave in Whitley County. Brought cow to Berea to pay tuition. Earned divinity degree from Oberlin. Financial Agent of Lincoln Institute 1907-1914. Camp Taylor YMCA Service Director during World War I. First of three generations of family leaders in the struggle for equality. Descendants include educator, Horace Mann Bond, and former Georgia legislator, Julian Bond.
