Mrs. Emma C. Clement

Mrs. Emma C. Clement (1874 - 1952) - Named American Mother-of-the-Year in 1946, she was the first black woman so honored. As granddaughter of a slave, Mrs. Clement accepted the award "in the name of million of Negroes in the United States and in the name of all mothers." She was a graduate of Livingston College. later she married George C. Clement, Bishop, AME Zion Church. Rufus E. Clement, late President of Atlanta University, was one of their seven children.
