Mae Street Kidd (1909 - 1999) - Mrs. Kidd served the 41st legislative district in the Kentucky House of Representatives from (1968 – 1984). She is probably best known for sponsoring legislation which provided open and low-income housing in Kentucky. One of these, officially named the “Representative Mae Kidd Street Housing Bill”, created the Kentucky Housing Corporation in 1972. This same piece of legislation had been shepherded through the legislature by Representative Kidd in 1970, but was vetoed by the state’s governor. Representative Kidd also sponsored legislation to name Martin Luther King’s birthday a state holiday. She organized the first Louisville Urban League Guild in 1948 and was past president of the Lincoln Foundation. Among her many honors and awards are the King/Kennedy Award for dedication, diplomacy and legislative skill, the NAACP Unsung Heroine Award and Louisville Mayor’s Citation for Outstanding Community Service.
