Colonel Charles D. Young (1864 - 1922) - Highest ranking black U.S. Army Officer in World War I. Born in Mays lick, Kentucky. West Point graduate. Taught at Wilberforce University. Proficient in six languages. Retired from Army because of health, Young proved his fitness by riding his horse from Wilberforce to Washington, D.C. Reinstated and promoted to Colonel. Represented U.S. as military attache in Liberia where he died of tropical fever. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
